What is composition in visual arts?

The arrangement of elements within a work to achieve a desired effect.

Composition is about how the elements—line, shape, color, value, texture, and space—are arranged within a work to achieve a specific effect. It guides the viewer’s eye, creates balance and emphasis, and builds unity or tension. By placing the subject, using leading lines, adjusting contrast and color, and balancing positive and negative space, the artist shapes a focal point and a sense of movement. The goal is a deliberate, coherent organization that communicates the intended feeling or idea. The other choices refer to sequencing events, copying a work on a grid, or setting prices—topics outside how the image is visually arranged.
